Fred and his brother, Ray, were instrumental in the development of Howard Johnson Motels in Eau Claire and Wausau, and purchase of the Maple Manor Motel in Eau Claire.
In 1975, Fred, his brother Ray, and Fred's son, Phil, continued in busing, operating Student Transit-Eau Claire, Inc. Fred moved his family to Eau Claire in 1942, and operated the Eau Claire Transportation Company, La Crosse Transit Company, and Winona Transit Company with his father and brother. In 1939, Fred and his father, Ray, Sr purchased the Eau Claire city bus fleet from the Northern States Power Company. On November 18, 1938, Fred and Evelyn Reinkensmeier were united in marriage in Kansas City, MO.
Fred was born in Utica, N.Y., June 25, 1914, the first of two sons, to Raymond M and Marie L (Teller) Fey.
